Dog Basset Hound, Mr. Louis Lane's Twisted Leg Variety, 1880s Antique Print

You are bidding on a very rare original antique print from an 1880s French illustrated journal.
It depicts a beautiful "twisted leg" basset hound, the type developed by Louis Lane, which later became known as the Basset Normand. This and the stright legged basset (developed by Count Le Couteulx of Canteleu) were combined later to create the modern basset hound. This print is from before the first breed standard was ever written. Nice  piece of basset history!
It is believed that the Basset type originated as a mutation in the litters of Norman Staghounds, a descendant of the St Hubert's Hound. These precursors were most likely bred back to the St. Hubert's Hound. The controlled breeding of the short haired basset began in France in the year 1870. From the existing Bassets, Count Le Couteulx of Canteleu fixed a utilitarian type with straight front legs known as the Chien d'Artois, whereas Mr. Louis Lane developed a more spectacular type, with crooked front legs, known as the Basset Normand. These were bred together to create the original Basset Artésien Normand. The first breed standard for what is now known as the Basset Hound was made in Great Britain at the end of 19th century.

It is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 10.5 x 14.5 inches (26.5 x 36.5 cm). The picture area is about
8.5 x 5.5 inches (21.5 x 14 cm), with a French caption below and text above it. The text could easily be trimmed before framing, or hidden under a window mat.
The page is in excellent condition for its age.
