Rare Sailors Pride Plug Cutter Tobacco Guillotine Antique Bland Country Store 1890-1904 L557
We’re selling off our collections and today’s offering is a hard to find tobacco plug cutter made for Bland Tobacco Company of Petersburg, VA. They were in business from 1890’s until 1904 when they were dissolved after the American Tobacco Company purchased their stock. So, the age of this Sailors Pride plug cutter dates between 1890-1904.
Tobacco cutters like this one were common on store counters in the 19
th
and early 20
th
century when customers would ask the merchant to cut them a plug of 5 cent, 10 cent or 15 cent tobacco (note the sizing lines on the cutters base plate). Sailors Pride is a very hard brand to find in early advertisement and tins and I have not found any other example of a plug cutter.
This plug cutter does function and is fully in tack with no damage other than an even patina of surface rust.
Normal condition for a cast iron piece of this age. This is in original un-restored condition. All the parts including nuts and bolts appear to be original.
It measures: 12” l x 4.5”w x 8.5” h
It’s very decorative and highly molded. This is a great piece of Americana for your Country Store display. It can be mounted on a portable base, a counter, or wall.
